On Tuesday, June 21, a ceremonial raising of the Green Flag took place at the Faculty of Tourism and Hospitality Management in front of students and guests of honor. The Faculty of Tourism and Hospitality Management has acquired the status of an international FEE EcoCampus (Foundation for Environmental Education). The international award and the Green Flag are given for achievements in the field of environmental protection, and FTHM is the first institution of the University of Rijeka to receive this distinction.

The meeting was opened by Dean Professor Sandra Janković, Ph.D., who thanked the members of the Environmental Committee, students, faculty and external members, the Žmergo Association and the City of Opatija for their involvement in numerous activities. The Vice Mayor of the City of Opatija, Kristina Đukić, congratulated the Faculty on the recognition and expressed her satisfaction that students are applying their knowledge of sustainable development in practice. The Vice Rector for Digitalization and Development of the University of Rijeka, Professor Senka Maćešić, Ph.D., emphasized that the University promotes the Sustainable Development Goals, that each component has its own officer and that one of the officers for the SDG goals at FTHM Professor Marinela Krstinić Nižić, Ph.D., thus proved that the planned environmental and social goals can be achieved for the benefit of the entire community. The green flag was raised by the student members of the Environmental Committee.

After raising the flag, students presented the activities of the Environmental Committee, such as blue, green, and digital cleaning, eco-recipes for proper nutrition, energy-saving tips, analyses of energy consumption and travel habits of students and staff when traveling to and from work, and a poster with the Sustainable Development Goals. For Biodiversity Day, students made birdhouses and set up a green classroom in the garden. The Green Study project was funded by the Student Centre Rijeka.

Earning the certificate and Green Flag raises awareness of sustainable development among students, staff, and the local and wider community, and promotes environmentally friendly and socially responsible projects. By involving students in projects at the Faculty, they prove that they will be able to carry out similar and even more challenging projects in the labour market
