The importance of the Department of Tourism is reflected in its area of activities. The department is actively involved in all Faculty of Tourism and Hospitality Management activities.

The primary activities of the department encompass the scientific, research, professional and teaching activities of its members. The scientific activity of the department is based on carrying out scientific and research projects financed by the Croatian Ministry of Science, Education and Sports and on publishing scientific and professional research papers. The members of the department actively participate in international and national scientific and professional conferences, workshops and consultations. A special area of interest for the department is to carry out developmental studies, tourism development strategies and major tourism plans as well as professional studies. The department's research result contribute to the advancement of tourism in the Republic of Croatia with the purpose of creating a competitive tourist destination on the tourism market.

Members of the department research a complex area of tourism. Particular emphasis is placed on the following areas:

  • Tourism destination management
  • Tourism policy
  • Specific forms of tourism
  • Sustainable tourism development

The main teaching activities of the department consist of teaching full-time and part-time undergraduate and graduate study programmes in Opatija as well as the Study Centre in Zabok. Members of the department are supervisors of Bachelor theses, Master's theses, specialist papers and doctoral dissertations. Furthermore, members of the department are actively involved as reviewers of scientific papers for both national and international scientific and professional journals and conferences. All teaching activities are guided by the principles of the Bologna process. By taking account of innovations in the learning process, department members aim to advance knowledge transfer and assessment methods and techniques implemented in the teaching process.
