Faculty of Tourism and Hospitality Management in Opatija as the only institution in the Republic of Croatia, which is entirely oriented towards education, human resources development and scientific research in the field of tourism and hospitality, performs the Undergraduate university study "Business Economics in Tourism and Hospitality" (4 years, 240 ECTS).

The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) has awarded the study program a UNWTO.TedQual quality certificate for the period 2020-2024. UNWTO.TedQual is the UNWTO.Themis Foundation program and is the most important proof of quality for higher education, training and research programs in tourism worldwide.

Undergraduate study programme "Business Economics in Tourism and Hospitality" consists of two modules:

  • Tourism Management
  • Hospitality Management

The Undergraduate university study programme is performed at the Faculty of Tourism and Hospitality Management in Opatija as a:

  • full-time study programme or
  • part-time study programme 

The Undergraduate university study programme at the Study Centre in Zabok is performed as a:

  • part-time study programme

Enrolment conditions

Completed four-year secondary school, certificate of the state graduation exam and conditions acquired for the enrolment in the first year of study.

Aim of the study programme

The aim of the study programme is to train students to solve complex business activities and to manage business processes in the field of business economics in tourism and hospitality.

Competences acquired upon study

  • Knowledge command in the field of business economics in tourism and hospitality;
  • Ability to apply methods and business models in tourism and hospitality;
  • Ability to monitor and analyze economic and tourism policies, practices and trends;
  • Ability to manage human, financial, material and information resources;
  • Project management ability;
  • Organizational and managerial skills;
  • Business communication skills in mother tongue and foreign languages, and the use of information and communication technology;
  • Ability to understand legislation and standards in tourism and hospitality;
  • Ability to evaluate and propose appropriate development strategies, business plans and budget;
  • Ability to take responsibility for decision-making and to perform more complex business activities in tourism and hospitality, while respecting the principles of ethics and social responsibility.

Upon completion of this study programme, students will develop their personal skills and competences, including communication skills, learning abilities, independent work, research skills, teamwork, logical economic deliberation and others.

Employment opportunities

Upon completion of this programme, students will be able to perform jobs in the field of tourism, but also in other areas of business economics. The undergraduate study programme is designed to provide relevant knowledge for carrying out lower and mid-level managerial jobs in the tourism sector. Upon completion of this study programme, employment opportunities are offered in:

  • Tourism organizations, tourist boards, tourist agencies and tourist associations;
  • Hotels and all selective forms of tourist supply and accompanying industries;
  • Public sector, communal system, media, accounting, control and inspection services;
  • Education system;

Financial institutions and other companies where the specific knowledge in the field of tourism and hospitality is required.

Continuation of studies

Applicants with the diploma of the University Bachelor of Economics (240 ECTS) can continue studying at one of the graduate studies, or enrol some of the lifelong learning programmes, respectively.
